Mo Ran is an exorcist born with the ability to see supernatural beings. A divine heart elixir hidden inside her makes her a target for demons, so she enters a marriage contract with Lie Jiu, a nine-tailed fox. As they travel together and take on supernatural cases, an ancient bond between them begins to surface, tangled in the fate of her past life.
When their old enemy, Chi Long, breaks free of his seal, he engineers misunderstandings to drive them apart and sets off a crisis between humans and demons. Their journey takes them through a broken contract, deadly battles, and a passage across the River of Forgetfulness before they can resolve a thousand years of resentment and find their way back to each other.
