In 1990s China, headstrong Lu Xiao Lu, 19, reluctantly starts working at a saccharin factory, following the expected path. As he adapts to factory life, bonding with coworkers and resisting full conformity, he begins to see the growing disconnect between the nation’s propaganda and the reality of an indifferent, profit-driven system. Through his relationships, Lu Xiao Lu decides to fight for the life he truly wants.
